Book Description
The jungle is astir. Something very, very exciting has happened beneath the old family tree. What could it possibly be? Whatever the cause, it certainly has the jungle denizens in a tizzy. In six glorious, bursting-with-color-and-energy pop-up spreads, Paul Stickland yet again dazzles young readers wtih brilliant, reach-right-out-and-grab-you self-activating pops. Follow the monkeys throught the jungle as they gather their neighborhood friends - elephants, tigers, giraffes, and alligators - to unveil something that makes them feel so proud. Big brothers and big sisters will be especially delighted to discover the new arrivals nestled snugly within the shrubbery...and can even rock them to and fro simply by pulling a tab. From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K. Small fingers will have no problems with the large, easily manipulated flaps and pull tabs in these two offerings from a pioneering paper engineer. In ABC, Crowther puts two pop-ups on each page, one per letter, hiding them behind flaps that double as labels: "apple," "bed," "car," etc. 123 is even simpler, counting to 10 with one large number per page. Both books are replete with visual punch lines delivered with cleverly used movement: flowers grow as the "garden" flap is lowered, the "pencil" leaves a blue line as it shortens, a different season lurks behind each of "4 doors." The author places a diminutive, slightly concealed robot into each of his cartoon scenes, and finishes both titles effectively with a panoramic visual recapitulation. From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. Wilson's I Am Reading title is a real change from the talking animals that so often populate easy readers. Kevin's friends Mickey, Ricky, and Nicky are forming a band, and although Kevin is well aware that the others are cool and he's not, he does have something to offer--his grandmother's basement in which to practice. As the band grows famous, Kevin feels that he should drop out, but his mates stick with him, and he becomes a fan favorite despite his limited talent. Kids in first and second grade will like reading books about cool kids who seem 12 or so, and Wilson uses this interest (and word repetition) to keep them reading. Gawky Kevin resembles the child from the movie About a Boy in his oversize hand-knit sweater, and, other than the basement, seems to have little in common with his bandmates....
