FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Childrens Literature

The cover of this tiny counting book boasts that it contains 10 super pop-ups. Well, only about half of them are truly spectacular. The others are simply standard folded pop-ups printed on sturdy heavyweight paper. However, the cute, smiling monsters that peak out and jump from the pages of this book will, for the most part, delight young readers. For parents of children who worry about monsters hiding under their beds, one page contains scary material. The page for the number eight reads, "Eight little monsters squeezed beneath a bed." As the page opens, the little creatures poke their grinning faces from under a bed. This might add to existing fears for some. The text is written in simple rhyming verse. 2000, Kingfisher, Ages 2 to 5, $10.95. Reviewer: Sally J. K. Davies
