Obstinate Muse of Freedom: On the Poetry of Sir Thomas Wyatt

FROM THE PUBLISHER

"Much in opposition to New Historicist framing of Sir Thomas Wyatt as a puppet of Henrician power games and a prisoner of his own fate, Krisztina Szalay's book demonstrates what creative energies had sprung from this poet's unceasing fight for personal freedom. This in itself would make him a far more interesting figure than is commonly thought had he not been a truly idiosyncratic master of diction and poetical form. By analyzing some representative poems of his the essay portrays Wyatt as a poet for all seasons."--BOOK JACKET.

FROM THE CRITICS

Booknews

An overview and analysis of the 16th-century English poet in which the author finds Wyatt to be a far more interesting figure than biographers have previously considered hima courtier who fought ceaselessly to remain "radiantly autonomous." She shows how he was much less the puppet of his time and place in the world than many have thought. And she counters feminist criticism of Wyatt's work by finding that the female figures in his poetry seem to be in command, albeit under the surface. Szalay is a teacher of English studies in Hungary. Her study lists works cited but has no index. Distributed by ISBS. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
