Looking at Fashion: Biennale Di Firenze

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In 1996 the city of Florence was host to its first Fashion Bienniale. Directed by Germano Celant, curator of the Contemporary Art Section of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Ingrid Sischy, director of the famous magazine Interview and Luigi Settembrini, it was composed of seven large exhibitions held in a wide and exciting variety of venues, from historic museums such as the Uffizi to new spaces like the Ferragamo Museum and the Leopolda Station. The Biennial was an extraordinary event which brought together an astonishing array of talent from the worlds of art and design and photography, as well as many of the great names in contemporary fashion. The purpose of this entirely new exhibition was to examine the reciprocal influences running between fashion and art in a contemporary society where there are no longer hard boundaries between art and design. This huge and rich book is the overview of the complete event and includes work from sculptors and painters such as Roy Lichtenstein, Julian Schnabel, Tony Cragg, Damien Hirst and Rosemarie Trockel; musicians such as Elton John; with nearly 40 famous names from the world of fashion such as Rifat Ozbek, Gianni Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Calvin Klein and Alexander McQueen.
