The Shuttle Scuttle
"Rep Weave and Beyond is the book I wish had been written... when I first took up weaving."

Book Description
Joanne Tallarovic reveals how she modifies traditional Swedish ripsmatta (or Scandinavian rep weave) to create her highly prized handwork. Often associated with rag rugs, rep is a simple weave structure in which the warp almost entirely covers the weft. While Scandinavian rep weave is usually characterized by bold geometric patterns, the author has evolved the tradition by combining blocks in unexpected ways and introducing evocative contemporary colorways. The 29 masterfully designed projects including clothing, table linens, rugs, and wall hangings will lead handweavers to their own explorations and innovations. Designed for beginning to advanced weavers, the projects are accompanied by step-by-step instructions, clear illustrations, and inspiring color photographs.

FROM THE CRITICS

Shuttle Scuttle

Rep Weave and Beyond is the book I wish had been written . . . when I first took up weaving.

Library Journal

Tallarovic is a full-time studio weaver who has devoted a good part of her 35-year career to exploring rep weave, a traditional Scandinavian weave structure often used for rugs in which the warp almost covers the weft. Rep weave often uses two different weights of weft yarn, a thick and a thin, which create a ribbed design. Traditionally, the warp was a very thin cotton sett at about 90 threads per inch. Tallarovic has developed what she calls the New Rep, which uses somewhat thicker warps with a less dense sett and strips of fabric for the thicker of the wefts. The first volume in Interweave's "The Weaver's Studio" series, this book leads the weaver new to this technique through planning a project, warping the loom, weaving, and finishing. The 29 projects include home decor items such as placemats, runners, and rugs. Even longtime weavers will appreciate the step-by-step photographs of the author's back-to-front warping process. This book should appeal to all but the novice hand weaver and is highly recommended for both public library and academic weaving collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
