From the Publisher
This book is aimed at experienced ASP developers who are working at the leading edge, rather than the casual ASP developer or beginner. For example, we do not cover the basics of COM, ASP, or the programming languages we use in this book. You don't need to be experienced with ASP to make the most of this book although being relatively comfortable with ASP concepts with certainly help. This book is also ideal for Visual Basic developers who want to make the move into Web application design. You should also understand the general principles of the use of components, and have knowledge of Visual Basic (or VBScript). Some of the samples are written in other languages, such JScript and C#, but you don't need to be fluent in these languages to be able to use this book.

Professional ASP.NET 1.0, Special Edition

FROM OUR EDITORS

The Barnes & Noble Review
ASP.NET ain't no "point upgrade": it changes your entire approach to building web applications. Your old applications are still processed as they always were, but for the new stuff -- well, the authors of Professional ASP.NET Special Edition have summarized it splendidly: "Every page becomes a programmatically accessible, fully compiled object, and takes advantage of techniques like object-oriented design, just-in-time compilation, and dynamic caching."

That isn't the only thing this book explains well. This is your single source for coverage of server controls (three full chapters); data management and XML support; state management; declarative and programmatic security; ASP.NET's extensive base class libraries (immense functionality, practically for free); business objects and transactional pages; web services; deploying to PDAs and other mobile devices; debugging and error handling; migration and interoperability... well, that scratches the surface.

There are a prodigious number of examples -- and, since the ultimate goal is displaying a web page, many of the examples are accompanied by screen shots of output, something many ASP.NET books don't do. Don't imagine it's just padding, either. In 1,350 pages, the authors of Professional ASP.NET Special Edition have room to cover ASP.NET in extraordinary depth -- and they do. (Bill Camarda)

Bill Camarda is a consultant, writer, and web/multimedia content developer with nearly 20 years' experience in helping technology companies deploy and market advanced software, computing, and networking products and services. He served for nearly ten years as vice president of a New Jersey–based marketing company, where he supervised a wide range of graphics and web design projects. His 15 books include Special Edition Using Word 2000 and Upgrading & Fixing Networks For Dummies®, Second Edition.
