He founded his own theater production company, Cultural Industry, in 1988, and has collaborated with a number of artists.

In 1993, British artist Rachel Whiteread used the interior walls of an East End London home to cast a concrete sculpture titled House. Once the exterior walls were removed, the inside-out concrete mass was exposed in the shape of a three-story home. House is one of 40 nontraditional public artworks, commissioned and organized by the London-based organization Artangel, that are celebrated in this book. Artangel codirectors Lingwood and Morris seek out artists, including filmmakers, writers, visual artists, composers, choreographers, and performers, whose works are not easily exhibited in traditional venues. Some of the better-known artists included here are Laurie Anderson, Matthew Barney, John Berger, Shirin Neshat, and Douglas Gordon. In addition to 300 illustrations and discussions of the projects by various writers, the book includes an interview with the codirectors, critical essays by contemporary art scholars, and a chronology of projects commissioned by Artangel since its inception in 1985. Unfortunately, the essay authors' credentials are missing, leaving the reader to speculate on their relationship to the topic.
