Shared Vision: The Garman Ryan Collection at the New Art Gallery Walsall

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Kathleen Garman set about creating an art collection with her friend Sally Ryan. Together, Kathleen and Sally formed a collection that is intimate, adventurous and eclectic, encompassing works by some of the greatest names in European art - Durer, Rembrandt, Constable, Van Gogh, Monet - as well as sculptures, vessels and votive objects from African, Asian, Oceanic and South American cultures. The collection provides important insights into the work of Jacob Epstein himself. Through a rich array of his drawings, paintings and sculptures, it is possible to chart the sculptor's long, productive and often controversial career. Now housed in a new purpose-built gallery in the centre of Walsall, not far from where Kathleen Garman spent her childhood, the Garman Ryan Collection represents in every sense "a shared vision".
