   Book Review

From Publishers Weekly
Frishman, head of Planned Television Arts, and Lublin, CEO of a public relations firm, who co-authored Guerrilla Publicity, team up again with advice on how use networking to one's advantage. Yet they emphasize that networking isn't just getting—it's giving, a process of building and maintaining relationships. The best networkers, they say, do it "because they love helping people and playing matchmaker." Frishman and Lublin offer step-by-step advice on learning how to identify the best people in each field through research, business contacts, evaluating the quality of recommendations you receive and more. The process involves flexibility and being alert to opportunity. The authors tell of food stylist George DoLese, who was waiting in line at a pastry shop when he began talking to the man behind him—who happened to be an executive chef. From this casual contact, DoLese obtained a job at a Donald Trump restaurant. Although occasionally repetitious, the text is clearly written and filled with tips and anecdotes that will be useful to those who want to improve their networking skills. Written in an engaging fashion, this book will aid anyone who needs good contacts for any aspect of life, from work to pleasure. Library Journal

Public relations experts Frishman and Lublin (coauthors, Guerilla Publicity) team up again to show how networking can be as useful at home as it is at the office. Readers may be disappointed, however, to see how little of the text is actually devoted to networking in personal settings. In fact, there is just one chapter on "networking for your life," covering healthcare, legal and financial services, real estate, and dating. A more appropriate title for this book might be Advanced Networking, as the numerous examples reflect the authors' own prowess in networking the upper echelons of business. The topics covered include using the Internet for networking (e-zines, mailing lists, etc.) and organized network groups. Each chapter ends with steps to help guide the reader along the path to networking success. While this work is recommended for public library business collections, beginning networkers might be better served by a primer like Diane Darling's The Networking Survival Guide: Get the Success You Want by Tapping into the People You Know.-Carol J. Elsen, Univ. of Wisconsin, Whitewater Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
