Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Cara A Geary, MD, PhD (University of Washington School of Medicine)Description: This is a dramatically improved and updated version of the keystone textbook for neonatal resuscitation. The previous edition was published in 1994. Purpose: The goal of this book is to provide a practical, step-by-step guide for the resuscitation of both premature and full-term neonates. The committee responsible for this new edition has aggressively sought to provide evidence-based guidelines whenever possible. This new edition provides a more practical and streamlined approach to resuscitation. The authors have most definitely met their worthy objective. Audience: The book is designed for anyone involved in the resuscitation of the newborn. Nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians at all levels of experience will find this book an easy to read, practical guide. Features: The seven lessons in the book walk the reader sequentially through the steps required for a full resuscitation. This edition also contains brief but useful guidelines for when to discontinue and when not to initiate resuscitation. The pictures, algorithms, and CD-ROM are a dramatic improvement over previous versions and help make key points for the novice (i.e., images of sick versus well neonates, and a visual tour of intubation). One shortcoming is the lack of any discussion regarding the use of CPAP in the delivery room to help maintain adequate ventilation, especially in the premature neonate. Assessment: This is a fantastic update to the already successful nationwide neonatal resuscitation program. The committee behind this new edition has created an easier, more practical, and evidence-based guide to resuscitation with extremely useful illustrations and algorithms. The CD-ROM supplement to the book is a fantastic tool for novice clinicians to get a "hands-on" sense of the resuscitation process.
