In a Forest

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Jacki Vawter

As a photo information book and beginning reader, the forest photos appear on the left and the text on the right with one or two simple sentences. The word "forest" is featured in blue on each page of text to highlight and reinforce. The book begins with the description of the forest ("Many trees grow in the forest") and then identifies creatures that are characteristic to the forest. A "SandCastle 2" book in the publisher's series, the number of words per page is five to ten. A Words I Can Read list is at the end of the book with phonetic pronunciation help, and it is sorted according to nouns, verbs and adjectives. The final page is a word match game. The color stock photos support the text, but the photo of the wolves may give some children pause. Packs of wolves do not live in all forests. A conditional statement is needed with the wolves, as was done with the tiger: "Some tigers live in forests in Asia." 2001, ABDO Publishing Company,
