FROM THE PUBLISHER

Brain cancer is becoming a common diagnosis. Brain tumors, unlike other cancers, can effect the brain in centers that control speech, sight, coordination, even emotions and thought processes, and subsequently every aspect of a person's life. 100,000 new cases of brain cancer are diagnosed yearly. It is the leading cause of cancer death in men between 15-35 and the second leading cause of cancer death in children after leukemia. And, an alarming increase has been seen in persons 65 and older.

Navigating Through a Strange Land: A Book for Brain Tumor Patients and Their Families is a book that includes both professional guidance and the moving personal stories of patients and family members. It is edited by Tricia Ann Roloff, former editor and program associate with the National Brain Tumor Foundation, and also a one-time patient.

Part one of the book discusses the different types of brain tumors and how to deal with the medical system.

Part two deals with patients and family describing circumstances that led to diagnosis, their decision on treatments , coping with ongoing problems, dealing with the sometime unexpected loss of a loved one, and lessons learned along the way. Professional caregivers, including world renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Wilson, neuropsychologist John Walker, PhD, both of University of California, San Francisco Medical Center University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, and Reverend Karyn Shadbolt of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and others discuss self- help, neurological testing, faith, self expression and hope in the healing process.

Part three is an extensive resource directory listing all of the brain tumor foundations in the U.S. and Canada, cancer-related organizations, and a reading list.

The only one of its kind, is easy to read book helps patients to really understand what the diagnosis of a brain tumor will mean in their lives.
