   Book Review

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Compact introductions to the lives of artists. Each title has the same approach-13 double-page chapters followed by a concise time line, brief glossary, handy further-reading suggestions, and a list of museums where the paintings can be found. Each book has a full-color or black-and-white photograph, illustration, or example of the artist's style on each page. Sentences are short and clear, for the most part, but there are no pronunciation guides for place names such as Le Havre, the Louvre, and Aix-en-Provence. There is some fictionalizing in Monet. This book is similar to John Malam's Monet (Carolrhoda, 1998). Although not first purchases, these broad overviews are accessible.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Childrens Literature

Art history is boiled down to the basics here and presented for young children. Each spread provides chronological information about Cezanne's life with illustrations of his artwork. Paul Cezanne's work in the late 19th century had a profound affect on artistic vision and painting styles. With an early interest in art and nature, Cezanne wanted to be an artist. Living in Paris, Cezanne became friends with a lot of other artists and writers. His work was embraced by the Impressionists, but he had his own style. He concentrated on patterns of color and shape. When his father died, he inherited enough money to live without having to sell paintings. This allowed him to paint just as he wanted. He painted both landscapes and portraits. Cezanne was one of the great masters of 19th century. Part of the "Life and Work of ..." series. 2000, Heinemann Library, Ages 4 to 8, $19.92. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
