Grade 1-4AThe life and habits of an Emperor penguin reveal facts about the Antarctic habitat in this book/cassette package. Written by Louise O. Young, and illustrated by Larry Elmore, Ice Continent: A Story of Antarctica introduces children to the environment of Antarctica and some of the animals that inhabit the area. Illustrations appear to be oil on canvas as the texture of the canvas shows. The book includes a world map locating McMurdo Sound and Antarctica, information on Antarctica, and a double fold-out page of animals of the region in their habitat, as well as individual pictures of the featured animals. Illustrations reveal additional interesting information, such as the teeth of the leopard seal. Randy Kaye narrates the story and information, faithfully following the text. Natural sound effects include wind, waves, splashes, and animal sounds to enhance the narration. Aural quality if very good. Primary students will enjoy the story, as well as learn about Emperor penguins and Antarctic.
