FROM THE CRITICS

Lavonne Adams

This is a comprehensive reference text on the assessment and management of acute and chronic wounds of varying etiologies. The purpose is to serve as a resource for nurses with a range of educational preparation, work experience, and interest in wound care. The target audience is generalist medical-surgical nurses and wound care specialists. Undergraduate nursing students would also find the book useful as a reference. The diagnosis, assessment, and management of acute and chronic wounds of varying etiologies are addressed. Special areas covered include burns, oncology-related tissue damage, and wound pain. Each chapter includes objectives, summaries, and self-assessment questions. Appendixes include practice guidelines, a glossary, and a list of wound-related websites. Most illustrations are black-and-white, although some color plates are included. The editor takes a comprehensive approach to the nursing management of wounds. The chapters are well organized, and include objectives and self-assessment questions, which are reasonably connected. The illustrations are of acceptable quality and educational value, although some of the black-and-white illustrations would be more effective with color contrast. The clarity of the writing and overall organization of the book would lend well to its use as a text for the preparation of wound care specialists, and would make it easy to use for reference by other nurses or nursing students. With the advances in wound care, the release of a second edition is highly justified.
