Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Jeanne James, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine)Description: This review guide is intended for use as a preparatory text for medical students and interns studying for USMLE Parts 2 & 3. The editors are in fellowship training, and the authors of each chapter are residents and fellows in each major specialty area. Each chapter provides a concise, no-nonsense review of the discipline, appropriately geared toward exam preparation. This second edition follows the initial edition published in March, 2000.Purpose: It is designed for use by medical students and interns preparing for Parts 2 and 3 of the USMLE. Since the authors of each specialty chapter are currently residents and fellows, they have designed a book with outline-style chapters, and have included sample questions at the end. This book delivers a significant amount of relevant information in a user-friendly format.Audience: The guide is directed at two audiences, and is useful for medical students as a broad overview in preparation for Part 2 of the USMLE, and for interns in preparation for Part 3 of the USMLE, as a concise summary of clinical disciplines which are not within their current area of specialization. The authors clearly identify these audiences, and the book is appropriate to each. Although some may question the credibility of residents and fellows currently in training as authors of a review guide, the book is well-written and contains the appropriate level of detail for an exam preparation guide.Features: The book contains chapters summarizing, in outline and tabular format, each of the major specialty areas of medicine (internalmedicine, pediatrics, surgery, dermatology, etc). These chapters are followed by a 70-question section designed to test the reader's knowledge, with answers and discussion points. Photographs are included throughout the book, with a center section of 30 color photographs, primarily demonstrating dermatology findings. The book also contains 3 brief appendixes, listing "Zebra's and Syndromes" (rare or unusual diagnoses), a toxicology listing, and a listing of vitamins and their respective deficiency and excess syndromes. Some specific information does not reflect up-to-date recommendations, such as the listing of childhood vaccines, but notation is made to refer the reader to another source for this information. The book contains many useful flowcharts for evaluation of common problems, such as electrolyte abnormalities and hypoxemia.Assessment: This book is well-designed to meet its purpose as an exam preparation tool. The content is presented in an organized fashion, and the question and answer section is a useful tool to identify area (s) in which the reader can focus additional study time.
