FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr

Although his life was not particularly exotic, Klee's colorful, vibrant, almost child-like work makes him an artist who should be especially accessible to children. Unfortunately, Connolly's study chooses to focus strongly on the black-and-white period and its works--at least one of which is badly printed. The color reproductions are excellent, but one wonders why more of these weren't used in place of biographical illustrations commissioned for the book which add little to the whole. This is part of a recent series, "Life and Work of" which takes on famous artists for beginning readers. Large type, bolded vocabulary, and back matter which includes a glossary, timeline, index, and bibliography are included.
