FROM THE PUBLISHER

LiveREADS is a dynamic, cutting-edge publisher dedicated to exploring the new frontier of reading. Reviews from both industry insiders and passionate readers have confirmed that the LiveREADS experience is nonpareil: Wired said "it's got other ebooks beat," and eBookNet said "this is what ebooks should be." The company's inaugural publication, ORPHEUS EMERGED by Jack Kerouac, was hailed as the first step in the future of electronic reading and was a critically acclaimed bestseller. OPENING DAY builds upon that tradition. First off, the design comes alive on the screen with rich color and graphics. There are hundreds of hyperlinks, offering more details on Negro League Baseball and Sachel Paige. There's an interactive baseball trivia game. There's streaming rich media to give you a taste of what's possible in the digital medium. We hope that you enjoy this experience, and that these features have made reading this novella fun and enlightening. Please let us know your thoughts about our first publication. And if you still like paper and ink, buy the paperback edition available from bn.com.

SYNOPSIS

Reminiscent of and Bernard Malamud's The Natural, W. P. Kinsella's Shoeless Joe,, and the film Field of Dreams, OPENING DAY is a novella with the kind of magic charm that transcends sport and rises to the level of heroic myth. When the owner of a downtrodden team in the AA Mid Florida League discovers that his aging groundskeeper was once a star in the Negro Leagues, a public relations scheme is hatched. But what begins as a stunt leads to an astonishing outcome that no one, least of all Buck Wilson, the unassuming former great, could have predicted.

FROM THE CRITICS

Philadelphia Inquirer

An exciting look into what the future of books might be in the age of the computer￯﾿ᄑ. LiveREADS has started on a very interesting road, indeed.

Atlantic Monthly

I get a good feeling from LiveREADS, in particular from its recognition that "electronic book" is a form of its own that can and should be more than text on a screen

Tulsa World

"Those familiar with the breathless pace of Standiford's thrillers might be surprised that a story as lyrical and gentle as Opening Day could come from the same hand."

Len Kawell

The folks at LiveREADS have really put together a book that shows what can be done with eBooks. It includes amazing graphic design, links￯﾿ᄑsound, video, and more." (Len Kawell, one of the founders of Glassbook)

Wired News

What the book of the future might look and sound like.
