Ken Lux--Author of
…"Silent Teachings" is a condensed, accessible, and accurate presentation of Meher Baba’s original "Discourses"…an excellent introduction to Baba’s essential message.

Book Description
"Silent Teachings of Meher Baba is a compendium of discourses given by Meher Baba in the early thirties. A part of the book is devoted to conversations with Meher Baba during his travels in Europe in the same period. "In these discourses, Meher Baba shows the way towards direct work on oneself, points out the pitfalls on the spiritual path, and provides means for a better understanding of the inner conditions that are indispensable on the pathway to God-realization. "Meher Baba attaches a spiritual energy to his words. His words have the power to awaken and transform."—Back cover of Silent Teachings “To arrive at true self-knowledge is to arrive at the realization of God. God-realization is a unique experience.”—Meher Baba

Chapter One: The Quest Consciously or unconsciously, every living creature seeks one thing. In the lower forms of life and in less advanced human beings, the quest is unconscious; in advanced human beings, it is conscious. The object of the quest is called by many names: happiness, peace, freedom, truth, love, perfection, Self-realization, God-realization, union with God. Essentially, it is a search for all of these, because all of these and all other noble concepts, no matter what their name, turn out in the end to be one. Everyone has moments of happiness, glimpses or truth, fleeting experiences of affinity with God; what everyone longs for is to make them permanent. It is a natural desire, based fundamentally on a memory, dim or clear as the individual’s evolution may be low or high, of his essential unity with God; for all living creatures are partial manifestations of God, conditioned only by their lack of knowledge of there own true nature. The whole of evolution is in fact a progression from unconscious divinity to conscious divinity, I which God Himself, essentially eternal and unchangeable, assumes an infinite diversity of forms, passes through an endless variety of experiences, and transcends a countless number of self-imposed limitations. Evolution from the standpoint of the Creator is a divine sport, in which the unconditioned tests the infinitude of His absolute knowledge, power, and bliss in the midst of all conditions. But evolution from the standpoint of the creature, with his limited knowledge, limited power, and limited capacity for enjoying bliss, is an epic of alternating rest and struggle, joy and sorrow, love and hate, until in the perfected man God balances the pairs of opposites and transcends duality. Then creature and Creator recognize themselves as one; changelessness is established in the midst of change, eternity is experienced in the midst of time. God knows Himself as God, unchangeable in essence, infinite and manifestation, ever experiencing the supreme bliss of Self-realization in continually fresh awareness of Himself by Himself. The realization must and does take place only in the midst of life, for it is only in the midst of life that limitation can be experienced and transcended, and subsequent freedom from limitation can be enjoyed. Such is the quest—the inner driving urge of the soul—that has saved man again and again from total moral disintegration, and that will eventually lead him through ignorance, awakening, and illumination, to ultimate spiritual redemption. My function is to indicate the direction of the path that man has to travel, point out the pitfalls on the way, lessen the hazards of the difficult passages, and lighten and ease the final lap that ends in the culmination of his quest. I bring to man divine love and the life eternal.
