The Complete German Commission E Monographs: Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In 1978,the German government established an expert committee, the Commission E, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of over 300 herb combinations sold in Germany. The results were published as official monogrphs that give the approved uses, contraindications, side effects, dosage, drug interactions and other therapeutic information essential for the responsible use of herbs and phyto-medicines.

For the first time, the complete set of all commission E monographs has been compiled, translated into English and edited for use by physicians, pharmacists, health professionals, researchers, regulatory agencies, consumers and the herb industry.380 Herb Monographs with Therapeutic Information: Uses, Dosage, Contraindications, Side Effects, Drug Interactions and Pharmacological ActionsEasy-to-use therapeutic and chemical indexesGlossary of medical, pharmaceutical, and technical terms

FROM THE CRITICS

Journal of the American Medical Association

Certainly, as medicine goes back into the future, physicians must restudy Galenicals along with Goodman and Gilman. This didactic guide can serve as a useful foil to the present caveat emptor approach to botanicals in the United States. It might even stimulate the Food and Drug Administration to emulate Commission E. But for now, it needs to be added to the ready reference shelves of outpatient clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies.

Anticipated by healthcare professionals and consumers alike, this book represents the scholarly translation of the Complete German Commission E Monographs. It presents scientific information on the safety and efficacy of herbs approved for use in Germany. Additionally, important information that may impact healthcare policy in the U.S., related to the scientific evaluation and recommendations for the use of botanicals, is conveyed in the explanation of the work of this commission. This book provides English speaking health professionals with much needed and sought after therapeutic information on botanicals. It has a wide audience among healthcare professionals, including practitioners, educators, students, and residents across specialties, as well as those in the policy arena. This book is not intended for consumer use for self treatment, but it does offer a valuable reference and information for the general population. Authors of the translated monographs and editors of this book represent a cross-section of noted experts in the area. This book represents the complete monographs published between 1983-1995. It includes information on the regulatory climate, market conditions for herbs in the U.S. as compared with Europe, the Commission's history, evaluation methods, and criteria. Unapproved herbs are designated with documented, suspected, or no documented risk. Indexing, cross-referencing, tables, and appendixes offer the reader easy-to-access, comprehensive information. There are no other books at this time to which this can be compared. As with all books that discuss therapeutics, however, new research may add to or challenge the information presented, and must be consideredwhen developing treatment plans with patients. This is an important reference book for healthcare providers committed to the responsible use of botanicals in their practice, through their own initiation, or in understanding the safety and efficacy of botanicals used by their patients.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Here is a reference book on botanical medicine that physicians can trust. This book provides concise therapeutic information on herbal remedies gleaned from the experimental and clinical literature. Accurate, responsible, authoritative, it is a must for every health professional interested in practicing natural medicine. It is also a model I hope will be used for the review and evaluation of herbs in the U.S.  — (Andrew T. Weil, M.D., School of Publich Health, Program for Integrative Medicine, Univ of Arizona)

The Commission E Monographs represent the most accurate information available in the entire world on the safety and efficacy of herbs and phytomedicines. As such they are worthy of careful study by anyone interested in any type of drug therapy. Ignorance of the Commission E Monographs is ignorance of a substantial segment of modern medicine.  — (Varro E. Tyler, Ph.D., Sc.D., Dean & Distinguished Professor of Pharmacognosy Emeritus, School of Pharmacy & Pharmacal Sciences, Purdue University)
