A German Expressionist and Jewish prophet, Else Lasker-Schueler (1869-1945) creates a poetic tradition that shimmers with the sweet magic and tragic sorrow of the human soul. Her richly imagistic and sensual poetry is characterized by its preoccupation with nature and the body. A contemporary of such artists as Georg Trakl and Franz Marc, Lasker-Schueler lived in Berlin where she was awarded the 1932 Kleist Prize. She later fled to Palestine where she died in 1945.
