From the Back Cover
If you subscribe to the opinion that televisions, Japanese lanterns, and electric guitars are not essential camping equipment, then The Best in Tent Camping: The Carolinas should be your constant companion.
From the North Carolina Mountains to the South Carolina Lowlands, camping in the Carolinas has never been better. The Best in Tent Camping: The Carolinas is a guidebook for tent campers who like quiet, scenic, and serene campsites. It's the perfect resource if you blanch at the thought of pitching a tent on a concrete slab, trying to sleep through the blare of another camper's boom box, or waking up to find your tent surrounded by a convoy of RVs.
The Best in Tent Camping: The Carolinas will guide you to the quietest, most beautiful, most secure, and best managed campgrounds in the Tarheel and Palmetto states. Painstakingly selected from hundreds of campgrounds, each campsite is rated for beauty, noise, privacy, security, spaciousness, and cleanliness.
Each campground profile gives unbiased and thorough evaluations, taking the guess work out of finding the perfect site. Essential details on facilities, reservations, fees, and restrictions, as well as an accurate, easy-to-read campground map make locating the perfect site a snap. Also included are suggestions for nearby outdoor recreation and sightseeing, pinpointing attractions that often go unnoticed.

About the Author
Born in Tennessee, Johnny Molloy moved to Knoxville in 1980 to attend the University of Tennessee. The lure of nearby Smoky Mountain National Park was too hard to resist. In spite of a disastrous first camping trip, Molloy developed a life-long passion for the outdoors, which he continues today, 15 years and 1,300 nights later. He is the author of several hiking and tent camping guides to the Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee areas and lives in Nashville.

North Carolina has many special mountains, but as far as being a memorable and distinct landmark, Pilot Mountain has to take the cake. Located on the edge of the Piedmont, Pilot Mountain rises from the surrounding lands to climax in a circular peak of nearly vertical rock walls with a wooded cap. Named Pilot Mountain for its being a beacon for all who passed by, the park is now a great destination for tent campers. Hiking and rock climbing are the primary past times here. The mountain area of the park is complemented with an additional state park segment on the Yadkin River, which has a living historical farm, fishing and canoeing opportunities and yet other hiking trails.
The campground is situated, not surprisingly, on a slope of Pilot Mountain. Before you imagine having to buckle yourself in from rolling off a hill, realize that the sites themselves have been leveled --for the most part, but all sites have level tent pads, making mountainside slumber more likely.
