As a companion to Basic & clinical pharmacology, 9th ed., this medical study guide summarizes key facts about autonomic drugs, cardiovascular drugs, drugs that act in the central nervous system, endocrine drugs, and chemotherapeutic drugs. Each of the 63 chapters ends with 10-15 USMLE style questions. FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Eric M. Scholar, PhD (University of Nebraska Medical Center)Description: This book is designed to help students review pharmacology and to prepare for regular exams and the national boards. The previous edition was published in 1998. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a book that reviews all areas of pharmacology and supplies review material for pharmacology exams and the national boards. These are worthy objectives, as most other review books are strictly for the boards. The authors meet their stated objectives. Audience: The book is written for students taking pharmacology, particularly medical students, although other students also would find the book useful. The author is a widely known authority in the area, having written many books. Features: The subject of pharmacology is divided into topics followed by most courses and textbooks. Each chapter lists a set of objectives and then a concise review of the subject matter. Tables of definitions and diagrams illustrating the major subdivisions within each drug group are provided. Tables of important drug names are also included in each chapter. Each chapter ends with practice questions followed by a list of answers and explanations. Finally, two appendixes are provided, one that is an updated list of drugs that appear frequently in board and course examinations with concise descriptions of their characteristics and one on test strategies that summarizes various time saving devices useful for answering specific types of questions. Assessment: This book provides an extensive amount of review material plus questions as it is both a pharmacology review and a board review. Although it is informative, I feel it contains way too much material. In my opinion, the book could have been shortened by excluding certain drugs and drug classes that are not used that much anymore and are probably not going to be on the boards. Most of the questions are not in the current board format, but nevertheless are helpful in reviewing pharmacology.
