   Book Review

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-Pakistan opens with a basic overview that should be sufficient for most reports: geography, history, government, economy, people and lifestyle, language, arts, leisure, and foods. Readers are often referred to the following "A Closer Look" section where spreads in alphabetical order treat in more depth such topics as air pollution, carpet weaving, cricket, or the status of women. The brief conclusion covers relations with North America and is followed by a clear, colorful map; a fine glossary of Pashtu, Punjabi, and Urdu words, as well as one of potentially unfamiliar English vocabulary; a bibliography; and an extensive index. The lucid, objective, and current text (through 2001) is supported by an open format with numerous attractive, informative, full-color photographs, making this an excellent update to older works about a country much in the news recently.Diane S. Pakistan

ANNOTATION

Presents information on the geography, history, government, economy, people, social life and customs, arts, and relations with North America of Pakistan, an Islamic country in South Asia.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Once part of British India, Pakistan is a young nation that emerged from the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The country is home to breathtaking landscapes and vibrant ethnic groups, yet its short history has been plagued by recurrent political and economic instability. From the second-highest mountain in the world to the life-giving waters of the Indus River, from the peaceful kingdom of Hunza to the war-torn territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and from hypnotic qawwali melodies to the rock music of Junoon, this book showcases a devout and hardworking people who are proud of their Islamic heritage.
