Mutt in the Iron Muzzle

ANNOTATION

An intrigue involving the election of class president reminds Wishbone of the twin brother of King Louis XIV of France who must decide if he should risk everything to escape his iron mask and trade it for the king's crown.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Damont Jones is running unopposed for class president and he wants to keep it that way. He hatches a plot to keep Joe Talbot busy as catcher for the traveling Little League team. The Damonster's plan is almost perfect, but he forgets one thing, Wishbone. This intrigue reminds Wishbone of the exciting book The Man in the Iron Mask. Imagining himself as Philippe, twin brother of the king of France, Wishbone must decide if he should risk everything to escape his iron mask and trade it in for the king's crown.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh

Wishbone, the little white terrier with brown spots that TV made famous, now stars in books as well. This tale takes Wishbone to France during the reign of Louis XIV. His perilous journey brings to mind the Alexander Dumas story, The Man in the Iron Mask, though it is not a true retelling of it. Chapters alternate between Wishbone's adventures in Paris and his similar adventures with his buddies back home in contemporary America. Fans of the TV series and others willing to suspend their disbelief of a canine who masquerades as a prince may be more comfortable with the format than will readers new to the characters and premise. However, both groups of readers will find adventure, humor, characters to relate to, and a satisfyingly moral conclusion in this tale of two tales. There are many titles in "The Adventures of Wishbone" series. In all of them, the plots are based on classic stories and many, like the one reviewed, are available in a large type edition. 1999 (orig.
