FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

In this sequel to The Complete Book of Abs, the best seller that sparked a fitness obsession in the early 1990s, Brungardt addresses women of all fitness levels and ages. As the title indicates, his emphasis is abdominal work, and he does an excellent job explaining how to do each exercise via written instructions, helpful tips, and photos. Readers are also made aware of each exercise's difficulty level, lower back risk, and area of focus. Many different routines are suggested, including some for pregnant women, women with access to gym equipment, and women who want to do some exercises while at their desk at work. Brungardt also includes information on related topics like eating, motivation, and wellness. Unfortunately, despite the author's best intentions, the guide suffers from awkward organization, which makes it hard to follow and use. For example, several ab exercises are described using only text early on, and readers have to turn to the back of the book to get complete illustrations. Still, the contents have value, and libraries with women's fitness collections will want to consider. [Although the publisher claims that this is the "first-ever ab workout book created exclusively for women," a search of Amazon. com finds James Villepigue's The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs: Women's Edition, published by Hatherleigh Press in January 2003.-Ed.]-Samantha J.
