SYNOPSIS

Abrams' Masters of Art series, instituted in the 1960s, chose prominent art historians to write a short text and commentary on well-known artists. These classic texts are reproduced in 9x12" paperback editions with 40 full-page color plates (each faced with a page of commentary) following the text. In this case, many of the plates are devoted to providing several details from individual altarpieces, with a continuous commentary. Linfert provides a rigorous discussion of the symbolism in Bosch's paintings and the personal vision he incorporates there. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
