Northrop Frye: Eastern and Western Perspectives

SYNOPSIS

Scholars of literature from Canada, China, and the US analyze the work of literary critic Frye (1912-91). Half of the 14 papers explore his theories in general; three look at his thoughts on literature in his native Canada; and the rest present reflections by Chines scholars on the assimilation of his thought in Chinese scholarship. Many were selected from the Symposium, but a number were solicited explicitly for the volume. Among the topics are the problem of wish-fulfillment in his visionary criticism, whether Margaret Atwood's Cat's Eyes is new feminism or old comedy, and the universal significance of his theory of fictional modes. A variation of the collection was published as New Directions in N. Frye Studies by the Foreign Language Education Press, Shanghai, in 2001). There is no index.
