FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Young children will be hooked from the first page of this excellent beginning reader book about the life cycle of a butterfly. The clear, full-color photos of butterflies, caterpillars, eggs and chrysalis are fascinating. The text is intelligent and will appropriately challenge the earliest readers. Insets of insect body parts, such as feelers, wings, shell and more are used to illustrate natural science and reinforce new vocabulary words. In addition, the book has a picture word list at the back. The text breaks down complicated scientific stages into simple, easy-to-understand parts. This title would be an asset to any school or individual library. Naturally, it is a valuable resource during the spring and summer months when butterflies are born. It is compact enough to take on nature hikes and backyard explorations. The book is one in the publisher's "Beginning to Read" series. 2000, Dorling Kindersley, $12.95 and $3.95. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
