From Book News, Inc.
Hoping to aid the health education community understand how theory informs research and practice and vice versa, Glanz (social and behavioral sciences, Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i at the U. of Hawai'i), Rimer (health behavior and health education, U. of North Carolina School of Public Health), and Lewis (nursing, U. of Washington) present 24 papers that look at the application of behavioral theory in a variety of settings. After defining key terms and concepts, four chapters focus on particular bodies of the theory: the health belief model, the theory of reasoned action and planned behavior, the transtheoretical model, and the precaution adoption process plan. Further chapters examine interpersonal theories; social cognitive theory, social networks, and social support; models for the community or aggregate levels of change; and finally, applications of overarching planning and process models.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR

Review
Praise for Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and Practice "This book reflects with crystal clarity for students and practitioners the advances in theories and their application in health promotion and education since the previous edition, but also challenges the theorists and researchers to address the gaps that need to be filled before the next edition." — Lawrence W. Green, visiting professor, Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University "The third edition of Health Behavior and Health Education will be indispensable for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working to translate research into practice. This volume charts new territory-from research design to application-and gives the field the lift and vision we've needed." — C. Tracy Orleans, senior scientist, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation "Regardless of the practice site for health educators, and the nature of the practical problems they address in their daily work, the theoretically-driven orientation of this book is a major resource. After all, there is nothing more practical than a good theory-and this text is full of them!" — Nancy Fugate Woods, dean, School of Nursing, University of Washington

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The first edition of Health Behavior and Health Education was a groundbreaking collection of chapters that provided in-depth analyses of various health behavior theories relevant to health education. In this completely revised and updated second edition of Health Behavior and Health Education, the contributors offer the most current information on developments in health behavior theory, research, and practice. Drawing from such fields as cognitive and organizational psychology, marketing, and communications, the authors explain the diverse factors affecting health behavior. They analyze a variety of health behavior theories and apply them to health promotion and education, exploring three levels of approach for influencing health behavior: the individual, interpersonal, and group or community levels. This revised edition includes information on the challenges of making health behavior theory relevant and useful in populations with varied sociodemographic and cultural backgrounds. The expanded second edition also explores how health promotion theory, research, and practice might advance in the face of increased globalization, new communication technologies, and health care reform.
