When I was first asked to write the life story of Lord Soth, I looked at it as a terrific challenge for a number of reasons. First of all, while Soth is an immensely popular character in the Dragonlance saga, he has always appeared as a Death Knight. This is the first time anyone has written at length about his life. Second, when I gathered all the information about Soth's life from the various sources of Dragonlance lore, I found several inconsistencies, which meant that I had been given the job of bringing all of the different accounts together into a single, and somewhat definitive, story. Third, while Soth is a tragic character, it's hard to like someone who murders his own wife and child, so I had the very difficult task of making Soth a sympathetic character. And finally, I knew how popular a character Soth was with the thousands upon thousands of Dragonlance fans, so there was a danger of me detracting from their mental image of Soth rather than enhancing it. But, judging by how well the book is doing, I think I can say that I got it right.
