Reviewer: Jadranka Popovic, MD (Children's Mercy Hospital)Description: This is the third edition of this multiauthored handbook of pediatrics that focuses on the acute care, diagnosis, and management of the most common pediatric problems and conditions.Purpose: As stated by the editors, the handbook was written with the purpose of assisting readers in the evaluation of common pediatric signs and symptoms and abnormal laboratory findings. The objective is to provide a guide to recognition, understanding, and diagnosis of medical problems of all pediatric patients in an easy-to-use and readable format. This book could be used alone for a more rapid review in a busy clinical setting or as an adjunct to the one of the major textbooks of pediatrics for more comprehensive studying.Audience: This book is written for medical students, house officers, and clinicians. Although pediatricians will probably mainly use it, other practitioners like family practice physicians and others dealing with children might find it very helpful. This book provides adequate information for those needing fast access to common pediatric problems. For more detailed review the reader should consult one of the pediatric textbooks.Features: The book has two main parts: an introduction and pediatric problems. Part two has been subdivided into about 75 common pediatric problems that cover major fields and systems in pediatrics. Each problem is thoroughly covered, focusing on presenting symptoms, differential diagnosis, laboratory assessment, and treatment. Problem descriptions are easy to read and follow and are clear in content. Numerous flowdiagrams are featured throughout. A very useful feature is the "hints" section that appears throughout that highlights important information to aid in formulating the accurate diagnosis.
