Reviewer: Brian E. Moore, M.D., M.Ed. (University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center)Description: This succinct overview of contemporary neuropathology covers everything from neurogenetics to tumor histopathology. Purpose: The authors aim to cover the essential elements of all the major neuropathological disorders, emphasizing key concepts based on current biomedical theory. Audience: General pathologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons as well as medical students with a special interest in neuropathology are the intended audience. Features: This review is designed not as the definitive word on the subject, but as a useable overview of the field of neuropathology. Although designed with practicality in mind, the authors do not ignore underlying genetic and cellular theory as a means of understanding real-life clinical issues. The early chapters deal with cell biology, cellular histology, neurochemical principles, genetics, and essential neuroanatomy. Then the major branches of neuropathology are covered: tumors, demyelinating disease, vascular disorders, toxic-metabolic injury, neurodegenerative conditions, trauma, neuromuscular disease, and developmental abnormalities. The final chapter, designed specifically for pathologists, covers common mistakes made in diagnostic neuropathology. A limited lexicon of neuropathological terms is appended. Assessment: This is an excellent review of neuropathology. Despite the lack of color pictures, the authors provide a large number of black-and-white photographs beautifully capturing classic examples of neuropathological entities. The clear, simple figures and tables were undoubtedly adapted from the lecture slides which the authors have presented to numerous audiences over the years. The authors provide no references at all, taking the defensible position that readers can consult weightier tomes for specialized references. The book is written with a delightful literary flourish. For instance, the authors describe dead mineralized axons as "immortalized mineral-encrusted statues." This attention to picturesque writing makes the book simply fun to read. I recommend this to anyone needing a superb general survey of neuropathology.
