FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin

This annual hardback, an indexed, alphabetical cumulation of first-rate profiles published in three paperback issues during the year, is a must for every upper elementary and middle school library-in single-issue paperback, cumulative hardback, or both forms. Each biography covers the childhood, youth, education, family, and career of people in the public eye: in this 1994 edition, Connie Chung, Steve Young, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Wilma Mankiller are featured.

School Library Journal

Gr 4 UpThis volume introduces people in the field of literature. Patricia MacLachlan, Scott O'Dell, Jack Prelutsky, Lynn Reid Banks, P. L. Travers, Maurice Sendak, David Macauley, Jerry Pinkney, Charles Schultz, Faith Ringgold, the Berenstains, and Garth Williams are among those included. For YAs, the reclusive J. D. Salinger appears with the usual informational gaps. James Baldwin's struggle against racism is detailed although his struggle against homophobia is not. These writers' life stories, general criticism of their works, and a black-and-white photo or two flesh out about 10 pages of readily accessible information. The prose is workmanlike: report writers will find enough detail to begin sound investigations and browsers are likely to find someone of interest. Suggestions for further reading follow each article. The name, ethnicity, occupation, and general indexes at the back include references not just to this book, but to all of the volumes in the "Biography Today" series.Bonnie Farrier, New York Public Library
