Michelle Kwan: Star Figure Skater

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Wilner tells the story of Michelle Kwan's career in a lively, accessible narrative punctuated with plenty of quotations from Kwan herself. We follow Kwan from the days of second-hand skates and the rink at the local mall, to her triumphs in the World Championships (four-time winner, including 2001) and her silver medal at the 1998 Olympic Games. With plenty of incidental detail—her father claims he named her after the Michelle of the Beatles' song—as well as behind the scenes information about her training for major events, Kwan emerges as a likable, ambitious but modest figure. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, the book also includes source notes for all the chapters, charts of career statistics from 1993-2001, information about where and how to contact Kwan and a glossary of skating terms. A comprehensive, readable book which should appeal not only to Kwan fans but also to those contemplating a career in ice-skating. Part of the "Sports Reports" series. 2001, Enslow, $20.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Barbara Maitland
