   Book Review

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Savage profiles 10 NFL coaches from legendary Pro Football Hall of Famers such as George Halas and Curly Lambeau to current Miami Dolphins' head coach Jimmy Johnson. Each subject is accorded two pages of text, two photographs, and a brief career summary. While there is less information than would be found in an average magazine article, individuals from different eras are gathered together, allowing readers to compare various leadership styles and techniques. With its attractive format and simple, straightforward language, this book will be a useful addition, particularly for reluctant readers.-Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VTCopyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

A professional football coach is one of the integral parts of any team. The coach is responsible for designing plays, deciding which players should play where, and most importantly, providing the emotional motivation necessary for the team to rise to any occasion. Some of the coaches profiled in this book, such as George Halas, Tom Landry, Don Shula, and Vince Lombardi have become sports legends. All of them have shown the ability to lead their teams to victory.

FROM THE CRITICS

VOYA - Maura Bresnahan

These two titles, part of Enslow's Sports Top 10 series, will become popular browsing material at many libraries. The books in this series profile individuals who have made names for themselves in the athletic arena. Each book follows the same format: an introduction to the career in question with a neatly organized comparison of each entrant's statistics, and a two-page profile of each individual with a separate page dedicated to the type of biographical information often found on a sports collectible card. Full-color photos for each entry more than capably capture the personality of those profiled. Chapter notes are included and some of the titles mentioned could be considered for additional reading on a specific athlete or coach. Each book includes an index but the brief nature of each entry makes it a bit superfluous. Sports fans will be familiar with the contemporary entries (Patrick Roy in Hockey Goalies, Jimmy Johnson in Professional Football Coaches) and will get a feel for the eras of the other entrants through their profiles. Other titles in this worthy purchase include Top 10 American Women Sprinters and Top 10 Professional Basketball Coaches. This series is sure to score points with young sports fans (and the adults who encourage them to read)! Index. Photos. Charts. Source Notes. Note: This review was written and published to address two titles: Top 10 Professional Football Coaches and Top 10 Hockey Goalies. VOYA Codes: 4Q 4P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, Broad general YA appeal, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
