   Book Review

Microsoft exam 70-098 tests the Windows 98 skills of people seeking Microsoft Certified Software Engineer (MCSE) and other Microsoft professional certifications. Windows 98 MCSE Study Guide covers the test's target material completely, accurately, and clearly. The guide offers tactical test-preparation advice to help you focus on topics that are actually on the exam. For example, the authors advise that you spend a third of your exam-prep time learning about upgrading from Windows 3.x to Windows 98.

The rest of this Microsoft-approved guide is a straight compendium of Windows 98 exam material. Throughout, chapters are clearly written, though some conceptual diagrams seem confusing. Lab exercises, scattered irregularly throughout the text, walk you through procedures one step at a time.

Each chapter concludes with a summary of important points, which is useful for quickly reviewing information--though it would be nice if each of the points referred to a page with more information. After each summary, the book features a series of review questions, with answers listed in an appendix. The back of the book also contains a good glossary and sequential reprints of all the book's lab exercises, while the CD-ROM features the popular Transcender drill software. --David Wall
