Review
"It is both usefully expanded and very reader friendly. The book has a distinctive helpful tone and an almost "how to do it" style. If one liked the first edition, then he or she will probably adore this one."

Book Description
"Creswell's Research Design is an accessible and useful book that stimulates students through walk through experiences, use of exercises, and production of actual writing samples. It is a book that models the types of issues that best suit different approaches and allows students to understand when to use mixed methods. Furthermore, its focus on theory and paradigms is done in a way that helps students decode their meaning."    --MARTHA MONTERO-SIEBURTH, University of Massachusetts, Boston The book that has helped more than 80,000 students and researchers prepare their plan or proposal for a scholarly journal article, dissertation, or thesis has been revised and updated while maintaining all the features that made the first edition so popular. New to the Second Edition:Because mixed methods research has come into its own since the publication of the first edition, every chapter now shows how to implement a mixed methods design in your proposal or plan as well as showing how to implement qualitative and quantitative approaches Ethical issues that may arise in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods designs have been added to a new section in Chapter 3 Writing tips and considerations have been expanded and moved to the first part of the book to get your research plan started in the right direction The latest developments in qualitative inquiry, including advocacy, participatory, and emancipatory approaches have been added to Chapter 10 Mixed Methods Procedures (Chapter 11) show readers how to identify types of mixed methods strategy, select data collection and analysis approaches, and plan the overall structure of the study "The bulleted key points are very helpful . . . The information contained in the boxes is brief, to the point, and extremely beneficial in one's overall understanding. The annotated bibliography is another excellent feature, particularly having it at the end of each chapter . . . it gives the student an idea of what the reference will be about and whether it may be beneficial to them."  --NANCY L. LEECH, University of Colorado at Denver Key Features:Writing exercises allow readers to practice the principles they learn, and if all the exercises are completed, will provide a written plan for their study Numbered points provide a checklist for each step in the process Annotated passages strengthen comprehension of key research ideas "One of the most formidable challenges of research design is stating your purpose. Creswell's approach takes the guesswork out of the process." --STEVE GUERRIERO, Organization & Management, Antioch New England Graduate School

Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches

ANNOTATION

Describes the purpose statement/the use of a theory/combined qualitative & quantitative designs/scholarly writing/etc.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

How do you decide whether to use a qualitative or a quantitative approach for the design of a research study? How do you write up the results of a study for a scholarly journal article or dissertation? This book addresses these issues by providing a guide to major design decisions, such as deciding a paradigm, stating a purpose for the study, identifying the research questions and hypotheses, using theory, and defining and stating the significance of the study. Each chapter is organized to first present the principles about composing and writing qualitative and quantitative approaches followed by specific examples from journal articles and dissertations from a variety of fields within the social and human sciences. Each chapter concludes with writing exercises that relate back to these formats so that the reader can end the book with a written plan for a scholarly study. Research Design is aimed at upper division to graduate level research methods courses that are taught to prepare students to plan and write up independent research studies.
