FROM THE CRITICS

VOYA - David Goodale

This collection of original short stories about dragons, unicorns, and other legendary creatures finds well-established fantasy authors, such as Jody Lynn Nye, alongside others, including Pamela Luzier McCutcheon, who have never published fantasy fiction. Two stories that stand out are The Last Flight by Michelle West and McCutcheon's The Dragon and the Maiden. West writes a moving story about the mythical phoenix, here in the form of an old man who seeks relief from the immortality that causes him to see everyone he loves pass away, and offers well-written dialogue between the old man and his granddaughter. McCutcheon's humorous tale tells the story of a dragon from the Far East who does not understand the way people in the West treat dragons until he meets a young maiden. Several stories in the collection are mediocre, mostly because they are predictable, but others provide enjoyable pleasure reading. Yes, Virginia, There Is a Unicorn by Yvonne Jocks has a partial sex scene that could have been left out but also a sexually promiscuous character who is important to the story's theme. This book will appeal to teens who read fantasy fiction, and it has the potential to be popular with mature Harry Potter fans. The paperback format and price make it an economical purchase for public and school libraries. Books such as The Mammoth Book of Fantasy (Carroll & Graf, 2001) offer stories with a bit more polish by bigger-name authors.
