The social life of England and Australia in the late 1800's is set against a background of shipping and travel. The characters are rather predictable, but Eva Haddon does them full justice. In a voice soft and pleasant to the ear, Haddon conveys a feel for the usual servants and upper-class family members and is adept at conveying the emotions of those gripped in a lovers' triangle.
