FROM THE CRITICS

Frances Porcher

This text is a quick reference companion to the main text by the same authors, Pediatric Primary Care: A Handbook for Nurse Practitioners. The purpose is to provide pediatric healthcare professionals with a quick, easy to use, and portable reference book of commonly used information including important reference materials. The book is an excellent tool and the editors meet their objective. The editors target experienced pediatric clinicians and students including nurse practitioners and physicians. The editors certainly have the academic preparation and experience to author this text, and acknowledge the contributions of the same twenty-nine professionals who contributed to the accompanying text. The editors follow the organization of the main textbook as follows: Unit One - standards of child health care, assessment models, family structures, and cultural perspectives on health care; Unit Two - child development according to the four main pediatric age groups; Unit Three - management of health and functional health patterns in children; Unit Four - diseases and disorders; and Unit Five - appendixes including medications, growth grids, and lab values. A major strength is the inclusion of updated information since the main text was published, specifically the new CDC Growth Grids and the AAP Recommendations for Pediatric Preventive Care. The text is definitely a worthwhile contribution to the field. The pocket reference is justified as a quick and easy to use, current reference for a busy clinician. Tables 4-1 (cultural perspectives on primary health care), A-1 (pediatric medications), and C-1 (pediatric lab values) are particularly helpful for clinicians.
