This is a second edition of a classic text that simplifies the radiologic diagnosis of arthritis. The authors have added a very nice section on foot arthritis as well as several new illustrations. As was the first edition, this book is directed toward radiologists and radiology residents. The most unique aspect of this book is its division into two parts. The first section gives the radiologic approach to specific joints. This is particularly helpful in showing the aspiring radiologists where to look for an abnormality in a particular joint. This knowledge alone will ensure that most arthritides are not missed and in fact are fully evaluated. The second section gives a full description of the individual common arthritides. This section pulls together the classic parameters of arthritis, along with the distribution for each, allowing a more sophisticated approach to these diseases. The illustrations are of uniformly high quality. The subtle erosions and early loss of cortex or sites of periostitis found in arthritis can be very difficult to reproduce in a text. These illustrations are well chosen and carefully portrayed. Although there are some illustrations of MR of arthritis, these are infrequently found here. As the author correctly states, MR is not generally important in routine arthritis cases. However, additional cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis and nonossified synovial chondromatosis might have been appreciated. Radiologists will find this practical book a fine introduction, but will also repeatedly return to it as a trusted reference.
