From Book News, Inc.
The sixth edition of this massive reference is cited in Brandon/Hill as both "suggested for initial purchase" and as suitable for a "minimal core list of books for the small medical library"; this double distinction is bestowed on no other cardiology book. The publisher has made this work available in various formats: single volume, two-volume, and single or two-volume e-editions. The present volume is the single-volume e-edition, which includes a CD-ROM and web access. Only the strong-of-arm should hoist this book, which contains more than a couple thousand pages, radically revamped in appearance and content (36 of the 87 chapters are new) to reflect the steep climb in new knowledge since the 2001 sixth edition (published as Heart Disease). One interesting enhancement is that the editors, having recognized the issues of professionalism and ethics, have included an index listing of potential conflict of interest associations for all contributors. Four editors have undertaken the revision: Zipes (Indiana U. School of Medicine), Libby (Harvard Medical School), Bonow (Northwestern U. Feinberg School of Medicine), and Braunwald (Harvard Medical School).Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
