From Library Journal
The publication of this tome completes the three-volume set documenting the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American paintings that were created by artists born before 1864. (The other volumes are Natalie Spassky's A Catalog of Works by Artists Born Between 1816 and 1845 and Doreen Bolger Burke's A Catalog of Works by Artists Born Between 1846 and 1864.) Consisting mainly of portraits-but also including genre paintings and Hudson River School landscapes-the collection is presented chronologically by birthdate of artist with his or her paintings then listed in order of creation. Painstakingly researched entries include discussions of the artist's career, major subjects, related works, exhibition history, and provenance. Representing years of detailed sleuthing and sure to become a standard reference, this thorough scholarly offering is highly recommended for academic libraries and related American art collections.Kathleen Eagen Johnson, Historic Hudson Valley, Tarrytown, N.Y.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review
. . . every bit as well written and carefully researched as its companions.
