This major new work on United Methodist polity, while it follows the structure and content of The Book of Discipline for teaching purposes, also seeks to interpret broader themes of church practice in their cultural and ecclesial contexts. Frank integrates his analysis of governance and administrative practices in The United Methodist Church with a historical and theological understanding of the emergence and mission of the Methodist movement. His discussion of the Discipline and the way it is practiced incorporates interpretation of current tensions and transitions in the denomination at all levels, including the significant changes regarding ordained ministry mandated by the 1996 General Conference. The book thus addresses issues that are critical for the future of United Methodism, especially its movement toward becoming a more global, ecumenical church.
