Ice Mummy: The Discovery of a 5,000 Year-Old Man

ANNOTATION

Describes the discovery by Alpine hikers near the Austrian-Italian border of the frozen body of a man who, after careful examination, was found to be more than 5,000 years old.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In 1991, two tourists hiking in the Alps saw something very odd sticking out of the snow. At first it looked like a doll's head. But it wasn't. It was a man, frozen in the ice for 5,000 years.

This is the story of the Ice Mummy, written for the first time in an easy-to-read format. It's also the only book to include information about the Mummy's latest incarnation—as a museum exhibit in Bolzano, Italy. On public view for the first time ever, he now enjoys a few twentieth century comforts, including a specially designed refrigeration chamber that re-creates the icy conditions of the glacier where he was found!

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde

Beginning readers won't want to miss this book with its captivating pictures of the mummy and its clear writing. When a child begins to read, there is a wonderful window of opportunity. Experiences that happen in these tender times may help a child make a decision about whether he or she will become someone who is hooked on reading for life. For a child who appears to hate reading might nonfiction may be more appealing. Give this easy to read nonfiction book a try.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

It is fascinating and just a bit spooky to think about accidentally discovering the body of someone frozen to death more than 5,000 years ago. Young readers can look at the color photographs and read about the serendipitous discovery, the steps taken to preserve the ice mummy, and the intensive study of his clothing and other artifacts. One of the most startling images is the result of technology that allows artist John Gurche to recreate the face of the frozen man. While the text is easy to read, it does not talk down to young readers. They will learn and probably want to know more about the ice mummy and other such discoveries. Part of the "Step Into Reading" series, a level 3 book.
