FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Joni Lucas

Part of the Survival! series, this book will keep children on the edge of their seats as they read about the daring rescue of three boys in the Louisiana swamp by a young Cajun girl in 1851. The boys, sons of a wealthy planter, take their younger brother Paul out into the bayou and leave him there as a trick, and then get lost in the murky water with no provisions. The two older boys are mean-spirited pranksters who are not well liked in the community, but Paul is kind and thoughtful. When the brothers are reported missing, the community makes no real effort to try to save the boys. But Lily, a local girl with a lame foot who has been treated kindly by Paul, decides to go into the swamp to save her friend. She demonstrates great courage, skill and undergoes great risks to save Paul and his brothers. Important themes in the book include self-esteem and the importance of friendship, kindness and character. While the plot is a bit thin, girls will enjoy the female heroine aspect of the story and all kids will appreciate the exciting details of the rescue.
