From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 4-- A wonderfully illustrated bilingual nursery rhyme and music book of popular selections from the Hispanic culture. The 12 entries include fingerplays, games, songs, and rhymes. Instructions for fingerplays and general rules for the games are also included. Musical arrangement for nine of the entries are provided at the end, along with the complete lyrics to the rhymes or songs. Countries of origin are indicated, and the brief bibliography indicates the sources used in the selection of the various versions. The refreshing illustrations vividly portray the joy and beauty of the children at play in their natural surroundings and show several areas unique to Hispanic culture, namely the plaza, the market, the fruit stands, and the balconies. Unlike previous nursery rhyme books from the Hispanic oral tradition, the English translations are not literal. Here, the English language versions of the rhymes have been crafted carefully to convey the mood and the nature of the play as well as the play on words rather than the individual words or sentences themselves. In this regard, the book is unique. --Oralia Garza de Cortes, Houston Public LibraryCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
