FROM THE PUBLISHER

Discovering Fictionis a two-level reading series that introduces students to authentic American literature. Student's Book 1 is an anthology of fourteen short stories by contemporary and classic American authors such as Isaac Asimov, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sandra Cisneros, and O. Henry. The stories have universal appeal that will touch students and make them think. Designed for intermediate students, the text provides interactive, integrated skills lessons developed around each story. Extensive pre-reading activities include prior knowledge questions, story previews and vocabulary work, author biographies, explanations of literary terms, and presentation of idioms and expressions found in the stories. Accompanying grammar exercises help students overcome such trouble areas as prepositions, articles, and irregular verbs. Graphic organizers guide students in discovering how literary techniques function. Also included are reading comprehension activities, vocabulary comprehension exercises, activities focusing on analyzing aspects of the story, and thought-provoking writing assignments. Review sections tie the stories together.
