Review
"...an incredibly relevant clinical-histopathologic text...useful for both pathologists and clinicians.... The authors are correct in describing the book as a 'single integrated sourcebook.'" (Doodys, March 25, 2002)

"Categories [...] are covered comprehensively and with the precision and clarity that has typified the collective bodies of published works by these three talented authors" "the authors have skillfully chosen to include complementary topics that are both timely and of great practical importance" "Perhaps the most significant entry is a chapter exploring an approach to reporting equivocal and borderline melanocytic neoplasia [...] Inclusion of this subject in The Melanocytic Proliferations should be applauded by all so fortunate to acquire this important book" (George F. Murphy, M.D., Human Pathology, Vol. 33, March 2002)

"...well-written and entertaining...will be a valuable reference..." (Modern Pathology, Vol. 15, No. 5, 2002)

"A fine text...good photography and special emphasis on new developments, treatments, and diagnostic techniques." (Journal of the American Association of Forensic Dentists, Volume 10-12, 2002)

Book Description
The rising number of incidences of melanoma has led to increased interest in the disease from diagnostic, management, and basic science perspectives. The Melanocytic Proliferation describes the pathobiology of pigmented melanocytic lesions, and provides guidelines for their diagnosis and management as they affect the skin and mucosas.
Extensively illustrated, this book is divided into four parts: the biology of melanocytes and malignant melanoma; nonmelanocytic lesions (e.g., lentigo, congenital nevi, compound nevi); melanocytic lesions with the potential to develop as melanoma (e.g., dysplastic nevi); and malignant melanoma (e.g., radial and vertical growth phases). Offering extensive discussions of each lesion, The Melanocytic Proliferation covers clinical applications, histology, differential diagnostic features, diagnostic algorithms, immunohistochemistry, electromicroscopy, and, where applicable, treatment, prognosis, and adjuvant therapy.
The Melanocytic Proliferation is an excellent and indispensable resource for dermatologists, pathologists, dermapathologists, and surgical pathologists.

The book is divided into four parts: (1) The biology of melanocytes and malignant melanoma; (2) Non-melanocytic lesions (e.g., lentigo, congenital nevi, compound nevi); (3) Melanocytic lesions with the potential to develop as melanoma (e.g., dysplastic nevi); and (4) Malignant melanoma (e.g., radial and vertical growth phases). The discussion of each lesion will contain clinical information and photographs; histologic information; differential diagnostic features; diagnostic algorithms; immunohistochemistry; electromicroscopy; and, where applicable, treatment, prognosis, and adjuvant therapy. The book will be extensively illustrated and contain 1,000 color photographs.

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Susan M. Swetter, M.D. (Stanford University Medical Center)Description: This book provides a thorough review of the biology, diagnosis, and treatment of melanocytic proliferations. Although primarily histopathologic in nature, this book uniquely combines clinical features, including morphology and patient management, with discussion of quandaries in pigmented lesion/melanoma diagnosis, and the use of adjunctive immunoperoxidase, molecular, and ultrastructural techniques to assist in the diagnosis of melanocytic proliferations. Purpose: This book is designed to provide a comprehensive approach to the histopathologic diagnosis of pigmented lesions and encompasses a multitude of topics related to benign and malignant melanocytic proliferations. It is intended for various medical specialists and as such, provides clinical correlation as well as current diagnostic and treatment approaches in the setting of melanoma and other melanocytic neoplasms. Audience: The book is directed to practicing pathologists, dermatologists, surgeons, and oncologists with an interest in pigmented lesion diagnosis and management. It may also provide a thorough understanding of melanocytic neoplasms, including melanoma, for primary care providers and patients. The authors are internationally renowned dermatopathologists, with expertise in pigmented lesion/melanoma diagnosis. Features: The book is composed of chapters dedicated to clinical diagnosis of melanoma, melanoma precursors, and clinical mimics, and it contains a vast array of clinical photos useful to all readers. Controversies and dilemmas in melanoma/melanocytic diagnosis are discussed including dysplastic nevi, the atypical Spitz tumor, and intraepidermal epitheloid and lentiginous melanocytic dysplasia. Uniquely, the book provides discussion of equivocal or borderline nevomelanocytic lesions, as well as an approach to the treatment of these difficult entities. Melanoma and its histological variants are described with an in-depth discussion of adjunctive diagnostic studies and molecular techniques that may assist in melanoma diagnosis and provide better understanding of tumor biology. The book concludes with a concise but comprehensive discussion of melanoma therapy, which is extremely useful to the pathologist and clinician alike. One minor shortcoming concerns the melanoma staging table in the appendix; because the final 2002 American Joint Committee on Cancer melanoma staging recommendations were not published until late 2001, they were not incorporated into this book. Assessment: This is an incredibly relevant clinical-histopathologic text devoted to melanocytic neoplasms and useful for both pathologists and clinicians. It differs from other books in its integration of clinical features, pathology, biology, investigational techniques, and therapeutic management of the entities. The authors are correct in describing the book as a "single integrated sourcebook" providing current information to diagnosticians, practitioners, and patients in the field of melanoma and melanocytic neoplasms.
